Gum Ball with Glove is an ongoing work that I have been rolling around the floor of my school and home, with the purpose being to pick up dirt, dust and debris from those spaces. Each time I add another layer of gum by chewing it and smoothing the gum out onto the growing mass. At its present size, I have chewed and spit out 14 rolls of Hubba Bubba gum. The glove underneath was what I used each time when rolling the ball on the floor, and I have included it to represent my process. It is to be exhibited on a plinth that is at an average person’s nose level so that the viewer is able to smell that familiar bubble-gum scent mixed with spit and dust.
Velcro Ball with Hair is another ongoing work that consists of hair from my hairbrush that has been rubbed onto a Styrofoam ball covered in Velcro; with the binding help of hairspray. The ball includes a number of hair colours I have been through. The purpose of this work and the Gum Ball is to bring attention to the things we encounter daily but don’t think about, and to also paint a picture of a space or living being that accumulates and sheds debris. The Velcro Ball is also to be exhibited on a plinth, but one that is at eye level.
